COMPETITION PROGRAMME
The competition programme gives the candidates every opportunity to present themselves as stylistic artists: from Bach to modern, from classical to impressionism, from solo works through chamber music to large romantic concertos.

PROGRAMME
Preliminary Round: DVD – Programme for both categories
1. First movement of a classical concerto
2. A virtuoso piece (free choice)
3. Violin: J. Brahms | Sonata in A major, op. 100 – 2nd movement Andante tranquillo
Cello: R. Schumann | Adagio and Allegro, op. 70
FIRST ROUND
Violin:
1. N. Paganini | One of the Caprices, op. 1 (except Nos. 2, 6, 12 and 16)
2. L. v. Beethoven | A sonata for violin and piano (except Nos. 2, 3, 9 and 10)
The total playing time must not exceed 30 minutes. The jury retains the right to interrupt performances which are too long.
Cello:
1. A virtuoso piece (free choice, with or without piano)
2. L. v. Beethoven | One of the following sonatas:
Op. 69 in A major, Op. 102 No. 1 in C major, or Op. 102 No. 2 in D major
The total playing time must not exceed 30 minutes. The jury retains the right to interrupt performances which are too long.
SECOND ROUND | FIRST PART
Violin:
1. J. S. Bach | A selection of movements from one of the partitas for solo violin
(except the Chaconne) | Duration: c.10 minutes
2. C. Jost | Portrait for solo violin (Edition Schott) | c.5 minutes
3. C. Debussy | Sonata for violin and piano
4. Free choice of piece, single movements from larger works allowed.

45 minutes. The jury retains the right to interrupt performances which are too long.
Violoncello:
1. J. S. Bach | A selection of movements from Suite No. 4, No. 5 or No. 6
(the Prelude must be included) | Duration c.10 minutes
2. C. Jost | Lautlos for solo cello (Edition Schott) | c.5 minutes
3. C. Debussy | Sonata for cello and piano
4. Free choice of piece, single movements from larger works allowed.

45 minutes. The jury retains the right to interrupt performances which are too long.
SECOND ROUND | SECOND PART
D. Shostakovich
Trio No. 2 in E minor, op. 67
(2nd movement Allegro con brio and 3rd movement Largo)
In the second part of the second round two movements from Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor will be performed. Every candidate will be assigned a candidate from the other category. Each pair will have adequate rehearsal time to practise the two middle movements of the trio with a pianist provided by the competition, and will then present them in the round. The candidates will be assessed as individuals. The points awarded in this part of the second round will form a percentage of the total points awarded for the second round.
THIRD ROUND
A violin concerto by J. Brahms, P. I. Tchaikovsky or J. Sibelius
A cello concerto by A. Dvorak, E. Elgar or R. Schumann
The sonatas and the work by Christian Jost may be played with the music; all other works must be performed from memory.
